I'm excited for my first post for this year's Summer Blogger Promo Tour hosted by The Book Bratz! My first featured bloggers are the lovely ladies at The Writing Duo, Sarena and Sasha!
After some collaboration, I just had to know what some of their favorite historical fiction novels were! Thank you in advance for participating, ladies!
Hey, all. It’s Sarena and Sasha from The Writing Duo! We’re twin sisters and teen authors and bloggers. We’re so excited to be posting about our favorite historical fiction novels!
The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill: Sasha read this for school in twelfth grade and she loved it! We haven’t seen the mini-series adaptation of it yet, but we’re excited to. :)
Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay: This book was just so.. emotional. We also read this one for school (for French class, but let’s be honest, we read most of it in English.). It’s about a young French girl who’s a Jew in WWII. It was so heartbreaking to learn about how the French were also negatively affected by the Nazis. And with the book’s switching POVs from the past and present, the book was overall a raw, emotional story.
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys: Sarena read this and it was her favorite book of 2013! Another amazing YA historical fiction novel centering on WWII that should be read by all!
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: Told from the perspective of Death, this novel centers on a young German girl who befriends a Jewish man. It is so unique and really tugs at your heart strings. Another beautiful, emotional read about WWII. (As you can tell, we love WWII novels.)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne: Sasha read this in eighth grade for a project and oh my goodness, it was so terribly sad, but so amazingly good! The movie was also amazing - Sasha watched it in tenth grade for class and she thought the adaptation was amazing! If you haven’t read or watched this one yet, it’s probably Sasha’s favorite historical fiction novel ever!
Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman: Sarena read it last year and she really liked how it’s set in the 1930s, before Hitler came into power. It’s about a teenager named Gretchen whose “uncle” (or rather family friend) is Hitler. If that doesn’t reel you in, we don’t know what will!
That’s it for our favorite historical reads! What are some of yours? Thanks for having us, Lauren! We had a great time.
About The Writing Duo: Sarena and Sasha Nanua are teenage twins living in Mississauga, Ontario. They love reading books in their spare time and enjoy science fiction and fantasy novels. They have been writing books since they were nine years old. The Gemstone is their first novel.
I don't read a lot of historical fiction, but Sarah's Key has been on my TBR for a very, very long time. I'm glad to know that Sasha and Sarena enjoyed it. I might have to go in search of a copy pretty soon!
ReplyDeleteThe Book Thief! It's the only book from this list that I've read, but I loved it! It broke my heart, but it also made me think about the world in a new way. That's when I know a book is great!
