Once Upon a Readathon Recap

Ok so I sucked at my first readathon. I finished Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting and read Girl in the Arena by Lise Haines. That's it? Yup, that's it. My schedule was packed with work, doctor appointments, and doing laundry or else going to work naked. So there are my excuses. So total I read 412 pages. Haha. Oh well, I had fun and I loved the mini challenges! Speaking of which, here's my answers to the last two challenges I participated in...

Mini Challenge hosted by Nikki at Wicked Awesome Books
Pick two characters from separate books that would be a good match. Hmmm. I pick...

Why? Because Lyn needs a little tough love from a guy like Sebastian. Lyn always does things for herself (including fighting to the death, I mean come on here), so I think Sebastian would be the perfect guy to steer her clear of danger and maybe he can convince her to let him help out.

Mini Challenge hosted by Ashley at Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing
Recommend any book of your choice. Pick any book you want and tell me and the world why it should be read and loved.

Ok so this one is easy. I want you to read Genesis by Bernard Beckett. Why? First let me just show you what the Goodreads description has to offer...

Set on a remote island in a post-apocalyptic, plague-ridden world, this electrifying novel is destined to become a modern classic. Anax thinks she knows her history. She’d better. She’s now facing three Examiners, and her grueling all-day Examination has just begun. If she passes, she’ll be admitted into the Academy—the elite governing institution of her utopian society. But Anax is about to discover that for all her learning, the history she’s been taught isn’t the whole story. And that the Academy isn’t what she believes it to be. In this brilliant novel of dazzling ingenuity, Anax’s examination leads us into a future where we are confronted with unresolved questions raised by science and philosophy. Centuries old, these questions have gained new urgency in the face of rapidly developing technology. What is consciousness? What makes us human? If artificial intelligence were developed to a high enough capability, what special status could humanity still claim?

So Ashley, are you intrigued? Maybe just a little curious? Good, because this description tells not a d*mn thing about this book. This book has so many twists and turns and I felt the blood rushing to my head reading it. At only 144 pages, I read it all in one setting and sat on my bed with my mouth hanging wide open. I would love to tell you more, but that's just it... I can't. There are no words to describe this book. The only thing I can leave you with is you will have no clue what you're up against when you pick up this book. What is that on the cover? Orange/red hair? Hmmm... I'm not sure... you just think about that.

The second rec is what you would pick as your favorite of the readathon.

Since I'm a slacker and only read two books, I'm going to have to go with Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting. Violet is such an engaging and stubborn character. I flippin love it. Sometimes her almost giddy relationship with Jay got on my nerves, but I would remind myself this is a YA book. But then again at other times, I would see how they connected and they would be content to just be together, lazing around comfortably in silence. Now that got to me. I thought it was sweet. It may just be my female hormones, but nonetheless it was one of those "awwww" moments. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next book in the series.

  2. Thanks for posting your choice for the matchmaker challenge!

I haven't read The Girl in the Arena, but it sounds like Sebastian could do well to keep this Lyn out of trouble. It helps that he's all mysterious/sexy too.

  3. I haven't heard of Genesis before, but it sounds like a great book! I'll have to add it to my TBR. :)
